In a June 22, 2009, article in the Miami Herald, George Harper was asked his advice on how large and small business can avoid some of the pitfalls confronting international investors.

When asked whether he had any guidelines for people planning their first foray into international investments or expanding operations overseas, Harper replied, "You have to do your homework, know your partner, know your market and know the laws of the country where you plan to do business.  At the top of the list, you need to understand the laws and regulations, especially tax laws.  Don't assume that the laws are the same or that the culture is the same.  Obtain good legal counsel.  There may be things that you're not aware of, like local dealer protection laws that look you into doing business with one partner forever.  Some companies have left foreign countries rather than comply with unfair laws and practices.  You have to understand the local market.  We don't advise on foreign law, but we work with a strong network of attorneys internationally who can help."
