The Miami Herald found that there are more than 100 lawsuits on secret dockets in Broward Circuit Court. It turns out that many deep-pocket defendants are finding themselves the targets of malpractice, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting lawsuits as the economy falters and more financial frauds and Ponzi schemes unravel. Steve Hagen, a Partner at AV rated international law firm Harper Meyer Perez Hagen O’Connor & Albert, LLP in Miami, Florida, said firms are under increasing pressure from clients to cut costs which in some cases results in cutting corners where background investigations can cost clients extra. Mr. Hagen said, “There is a tension between wanting to do the complete amount of diligence you want to do and what the client is willing to pay.'' Furthermore, Hagen stated that his firm has turned down cases when the client refuses to pay for background checks.
